RBGH on its Last Legs!

On August 6, Monsanto announced it will sell off its recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rGBH) business. This announcement comes after 14 years of battling fierce opposition from consumers, public interest groups, and family & organic farmers. Without Monsanto's billion dollar backing in Washington D.C., rGBH is likely to beat a speedy path to extinction and be banned in the U.S., as it already is in Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and all 27 members of the European Union.

Read (and watch) a previous Know More entry to learn all about rGBH and it's troubled lifespan.

Monsanto's latest ploy to gain public acceptance of the genetically engineered drug was a campaign to promote Posilac (the brand name for rBGH) as a "green hormone" because of its ability to produce more milk from fewer cows, thereby alleviating some environmental damage potentially caused by the unrequired cattle. Compared to the oppositions claims of increased cancer risk in humans, reduced cattle life span, and increased cattle injuries, the green claim failed to wow many. Since Monsanto's announcement to sell the product comes only a few weeks after the Posilac Green campaign, one can assume it was not a big success.

Without Monsanto's deep pockets funding lobbying efforts in Washington, it should be a no-brainer for the FDA to ban this drug in the U.S., joining the vast majority of the free world in proclaiming non-acceptance of potentially dangerous, ridiculously undertested, genetically engineered drugs in our food products. This is one extinction we can all get behind!!!
